Origin

Alimentómica was founded in 2011 as a technology-based spin-off company of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), promoted by the Molecular Biology, Nutrition, and Biotechnology Laboratory, led by Prof. Andreu Palou. Its activity focuses on the research and development of new compounds, technologies and innovative practices that allow people to improve their diet and health.

His team

The Prof. Francisca Serra Vich is the Director of R&D of Alimentomics and University Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) since 2011. She began her scientific career at the UIB as Professor of Biochemistry (1990-1998) and Nutrition (1998-2011); She has also held the position of Director of the UIB R&D Service (1993-96) and has collaborated in the COST Program, in the coordination of International Cooperation projects in the Food Science and Technology sector of the Commission European (1997-2000), occupying the position of National Expert in the General Directorate of Science, Research and Development (Brussels). Currently, she is the scientific manager for Alimentómica of the development of the European Preventomics project (2019-2022) whose objective is to develop effective tools based on omics sciences, including Nutrigenetics, to help consumers prevent diet-related diseases.

The Mr. Andreu Palou-March is CEO of Food, Engineer in Telematics and Telecommunications and MBA (Master Business Management). Entrepreneur with more than 20 years of experience, he has worked in different industries developing activities related to the design and development of products, marketing and commercial operations at a national and international level. Likewise, he has participated in R&D projects in different positions, executing multidisciplinary actions, involving programming, project management and human resource management.

The Prof. Andreu Palou He is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) since 1988. Director of the Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology Laboratory (LBNB) (since 1995) and of the Nutrigenomics, Biomarkers and Risk Assessment group (NuBE) of the UIB (until 2021). He is also responsible for the research group at the IdISBa (Balearic Islands Health Research Institute) and at the CIBEROBN (Centre for Network Biomedical Research on Nutrition and Obesity, since 2006). He is the author of more than 500 scientific articles and several patents. He has been recognized with various awards for his scientific career, such as the Dupont for Science, the Danone Foundation, the Hippocrates for Nutrition, the National Award for Nutrition from the University of Navarra and the Spanish Obesity and Medicine Societies. Assessor/reviewer/writer of numerous successful applications for Novel Foods in Europe. Prof. Palou was the first President of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN, 2003-10), Vice President of the Scientific Committee on Human Food of the European Commission (SCF) (1997-2003), Vice President of the Scientific Panel on Nutrition of the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) (2003-2009) and Member of the scientific/advisory committee of several institutions and public and private companies in the field of food, nationally and internationally.

The Prof. Catalina Picó Segura is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). She is director of the NuBE group at the UIB (since 2021) and deputy director of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology at the UIB. Prof. Picó has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) (2011-15). He currently coordinates the European project “Identification and validation of integrative biomarkers of physical activity level and health in children and adolescents” (INTEGRActiv) (2022-25).

The Prof. Luisa Bonet Pineapple is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). She is Secretary of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology of the UIB. Prof. Bonet has co-led the SALUX European project (2011-2014), focused on the promotion and evaluation of the status of food reformulation for health in Europe, and is editor-in-chief of the “Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics” section of Magazine Nutrients (as of February 2020).

 The components of the Scientific Committee of Alimentómica form the promoter team of the Official Master's Degree in Nutrigenomics and Personalized Nutrition of the University of the Balearic Islands.
